The site is right in the centre of town on one side of a green space dominated by a large 19th century seminary, and is overlooked by the side of Carlow's Roman Catholic cathedral.
The project consists of the construction of a new 350 seat performing arts theatre, four gallery spaces together with associated administration, performance and circulation space. The contract includes the full theatre fit out including specialist sound and lighting packages and also full bar, cafe and kitchen fit outs. Associated site works, drainage and ancillary services are also included. The gross internal floor area is 3130m2.
The structural steel frame for the main gallery supports the 29m long roof trusses. The resultant clear area and floor to ceiling height of 12m allows gallery to host almost any size of exhibition or installation. The interior of the building includes finished orientated strand board shuttered concrete walls and columns with all services and fittings cast in. Concrete trough slabs with a fairfaced finished soffit forms the ceilings in the large foyers and link gallery. The entire external envelop of the building consists of an opaque glazed facade.
