The Tivoli Overbridge OB409a involved the construction of a 30m span simply supported steel bridge over the Lower Glanmire Road and Cork to Midleton railway line, in replacement of the existing railway level crossing XC241 for Iarnrod Eireann.
The project involved the construction of a reinforced earth raised approach embankment of up to 15m high on the river Lee foreshore and reinforced earth wall construction up to the bridge abutments. Reinforced earth elements included patterned and coloured reinforced earth panels and Terratrel construction with natural masonry stone facing.
Also included was the dredging of approx. 10,000m3 of estuarine silts with marine equipment such as excavators on large barge pontoons and split bottom barges for dumping at sea off Roches Point under license. The bridge foundations on the southern abutment are supported on 20m deep piles which are socketed 5.5m in to competent rock, with the northern abutment foundation founded directly on the rock stratum.
Associated works include; major traffic management on Lower Glanmire Road, rock armouring to the river embankment with long reach excavators below MLWS, roadworks construction, site clearance and fencing, service diversions, drainage, public lighting and safety barriers.
